    About

    After studying and researching in Psychology I trained as a Social Worker and worked as a local authority social worker, specialising in children and families. I then worked for Dundee University at the Centre for Child Care and Protection, teaching on multi-disciplinary post-qualifying courses in child care and protection. I came first to Stirling in 2001 as Senior Lecturer in Social Work, returned  for three years to Dundee as Professor of Child Care and Protection and am now Professor of Social Work at Stirling.

    I was a member of the multi-disciplinary team that carried out a ministerial audit and review of child protection in Scotland - which reported in 2002 in '"It's everyone's job to make sure I'm alright"'.

    I am founding member of the Scottish Child Care and Protection Network which works collaboratively to coordinate child care and protection dissemination, evaluation and research in Scotland to ensure that those working with vulnerable children have access to best practice.

    My main research interest are in child neglect, children's resilience and critical analysis of child welfare and protection practice and I have written books on child development, chidlren's resilience, child neglect and work with fathers - all published by JKP.
