Research
  • Social identity within contemporary society. The focus here has been on the creation and sustaining of social identies within a neighbourhood context. Previous work has also considered the English in Scotland as a distinctive minority.
  • Flat Living within the UK. Research work has focussed on the renewal of pre-1919 tenement flats throughout Scotland, with current work exploring the management of private flats throughout the UK, drawing upon international experience in both Australia and the USA.
  • Housing and Planning policy in Scotland, covering both the historic and contemporary. Research has involved detailed examinations of post-war planning policies for the Glasgow metropolitan area and the associated creation of Scotland's New Towns. Work has also been conducted on the history of government housing agency Scottish Homes and the new local government planning concept, Community Planning. Work is also about to progress on the history of council housing in Glasgow.
  • Research methods. This work has involved producing accessible, comprehensive and usable methods texts for both the housing and social welfare professions.
  • House buying and selling. Policy research has been conducted on the reform of the house buying and selling system in both England and Wales, and Scotland for the then DETR.
