I came to Stirling in 2004 having previously held teaching and research posts at Glasgow Caledonian and Edinburgh Universities. I have a long-standing interest in politics, social divisions and inequality, which led in part to my studying sociology for my first degree. I then worked for two years in community education in Glasgow before returning to university to take a postgraduate degree in social work. I qualified as a social worker in 1990 and then worked in London and Edinburgh in both children and families and criminal justice services. As a practitioner I became particularly concerned about the needs and rights of young people, and political and media attitudes towards them, interests that followed me into criminological research and social work education from 1998 onwards.
