I joined The University of Stirling in February 2011 to work with Dr Sarah Wilson on the ESRC 'Young People Creating Belonging: spaces sounds and sights' research project. Prior to joining the School I worked with Professor Claudia Mitchell at McGill University where I was a Post Doctoral Research Fellow in Participatory Visual Methdologies linked to the the Participatory Cultures Lab https://participatorycultureslab.wordpress.com/ and the International Visual Methodologies and Social Change Project http://www.ivmproject.ca/ . During my time at McGill I was writing and researching on participatory video and its role in the production of knowledge, as well as teaching and running workshops on qualitative research and other participatory and visual methods. My collaboration with Claudia Mitchell and Naydene de Lange (Nelson Mandela Metropolitan University) led to the Handbook of Participatory Video, 2012, AltaMira Press https://rowman.com/ISBN/9780759121133 . The book due to be published in July 2012 involves 42 authors in 13 counties.
My research and teaching focuses on developing innovative methodologies and methods to work with people traditionally excluded from research and policy making. I have carried out participatory community based research with residents from housing estates in Bradford and Keighley http://www.jrf.org.uk/publications/community-bradford-white-estates ; British Pakistani and White British young men seen as being involved in anti-social behaviour in inner-city Bradford; People with dementia involved in campaigning for social change; and with young people exploring masculinities and sexual health in Lebanon.
I am Vice President of the International Sociolgical Assciation Visual Sociology Thematic Group (TG05) http://www.isa-sociology.org/tg05.htm , a member of The International Visual Sociology Association http://www.visualsociology.org/home.html and a Fellow of The Royal Geographical Society http://www.rgs.org/HomePage.htm
