As a large department we can offer students freedom and flexibility of study. We teach over 300 students in the first and second year doing Sociology and Social Policy alone, with a rating of Excellent in our most recent SHEFC Teaching Quality Assessment.
Rated Grade 5 in the 2001 Research Assessment Exercise, the Department is a large inter-disciplinary unit, combining teaching and research interests in Sociology, Social Policy, Criminology, Social Work, Dementia Studies and Housing Studies and a number of specialist centres. We are a leading UK social science department, located in our dedicated new buildings - The Colin Bell Building and Iris Murdoch Building on the Stirling campus.
Configured to facilitate research and to promote inter-disciplinary working, the building includes specialist accommodation for postgraduate researchers and a state of the art training laboratory for social science. Students will join a large community of scholars and active researchers: currently, we have over 60 academic staff in post, 29 postgraduate researchers working towards Doctorates and over 100 students taking taught postgraduate programmes.
